Everything About Greer Garson -- Julia Misbehaves (1948)

This is one of the best Greer-fests I've ever seen. It's got some corny jokes and screwball antics, but you've never seen Greer smile so much or look so beautiful or have so much fun.
Greer smokes. Greer sings. Greer flirts. She touches up her lipstick. She does the side stroke. She walks around in her bare feet. She wears a tablecloth. She cavorts in the mud. She says "black panties."
And it's loaded with animals! Walter Pidgeon gets spanked by a trained seal. Elizabeth Taylor is chased by a tame bear. Greer impersonates a sea lion.
Greer in a bathtub! She tells Reginald Owen "I'm in the nude." His response: "Well, get out of the nude!" He finally gets a kiss from her (on the cheek) after having already been in five other movies with her.
After Greer risks her life with a bunch of acrobats (doing her own stunts), she does a song and dance, much wilder than the one in "Random Harvest". The acrobats then pull her clothes off as they try to get her off stage. Lots of leg and even some cleavage when she kneels on a pyramid of men.
She has some very sweet icon-to-icon scenes with Elizabeth Taylor.
Greer gets me all choked up when Walter's mother makes it clear that Greer is not welcome at her own daughter's wedding. Then I get choked up a few moments later when Greer sees her grown-up daughter for the first time.
Greer has her usual great rapport with Walter Pidgeon. This is the most fun they've had since "Mrs. Miniver."
Old pals Mary Boland (Mrs. Bennet in "P&P") and Ian Wolfe are here. This is the first time Greer actually speaks to Ian Wolfe in a movie.
Elizabeth Taylor hits a golf ball. Was she a golfer? Or did they shoot that scene over and over until she hit the ball well enough? (We only see her actually hit one ball.)
After seeing Nigel Bruce bumble alongside Basil Rathbone for years, it's funny to see him playing a jovial womanizer.
Greer and Walter use a laptop computer!
Look at Greer and Walter when they're sitting at a table in the cabin and looking at a wedding photograph. It looks exactly as if they're using a laptop.
Greer says "There's something else" to Nigel Bruce. It reminded me of the time that she said the same thing to Olivier in "Pride and Prejudice" and to Walter in "Madame Curie."
Peter Lawford has a good line after kissing Elizabeth Taylor (at her wedding rehearsal to someone else): "The organist always kisses the bride, an old Welsh custom."
Apparently Liz was madly in love with Lawford when this movie was being made. The story of this affair is dramatized here.
And Lawford introduced Greer to her third and final husband around this time.
Greer plays the piano again.
Greer is alone with Walter in the cabin while he is dressed like an ancient Roman senator. "You look like the man who stabbed Caesar," she says. And then five years later Greer portrays the wife of Julius Caesar (Louis Calhern), who is wearing basically the same outfit.
Greer met her third and final husband, Buddy Fogelson, while making this movie. The story of his first seeing her is dramatized in the biography herein.
This is such a fun movie. I hope it's the next one they put out on DVD. I wonder if Liz remembers anything about making this movie, besides being in love with Peter Lawford. Has Liz ever written an autobiography?
Greer met Buddy Fogelson while making this movie, and they were married a year later. She met him because he was a good friend of Peter Lawford's, who brought him to the set one day:

BUDDY
Peter, why did you drag me all the way out here? I thought we were going to that new bar on Melrose.

PETER
I have a surprise for you.

BUDDY
Can't you stay away from your movie set for more than two hours?

PETER
Wouldn't you like to meet Greer Garson?

BUDDY
Who?

PETER
What do you mean "who"?

BUDDY
Who is she, your new girlfriend?

PETER
No, Buddy. She happens to be the most famous redhead in the entire world.

BUDDY
Oh, is that her down there? Yes, very pretty.

PETER
My god, Buddy. When was the last time you saw a movie?

BUDDY
Let's go. I'm thirsty.

PETER
No, that's not Greer you're looking at. That's her stand-in.

BUDDY
Wow, look at that little number over there laughing with those cameramen. Are all the female crew members prettier than the stars are?

PETER
Would you like to meet that girl?

BUDDY
You know her?

PETER
That's Greer Garson.
